The Last Sweet-Leaf

In the coldest part of winter, Fern has saved one last sweet-leaf, her very favorite. Just as she's about to eat it, she meets a shivering, hungry stranger with nothing at all. Torn but tender-hearted, Fern gives her treasured leaf away — and finds that sharing fills her up far more than eating ever could, as a new friend leads her to a sheltered hollow to share in return.

It was the coldest part of winter in the valley. A pale mist hung over the frosted ferns, and the sweet-leaf bushes had been bare for many days. Food was hard to find, and everyone's tummy was a little empty.
