Waiting for the Fireflies

Deep in the woods, by a quiet moonlit lake, it is the night the fireflies wake — and little Sorrel the rabbit has been waiting all day long. He simply cannot wait one moment more. He shouts at the dark water, he splashes and shakes the reeds, trying to hurry the fireflies out — but the harder he pushes, the more the tiny sparks blink in fright and slip away, until the lakeside is darker and quieter than ever. Just when Sorrel is sure they will never come, gentle Mama Rabbit nestles close and whispers that fireflies don't come to shouting and splashing; they come to the quiet. So Sorrel takes a deep breath, grows very, very still, and simply waits beside her, watching the moon rest on the water. One tiny light blinks… then another… and then the whole lakeside blooms with fireflies drifting up like floating stars — and Sorrel learns that the best things come to those who can be still and wait.

A wide view of a quiet woodland lake at night — tall reeds and cattails around the still water, a big round moon reflected on the lake, deep indigo-purple dreamy night, with no fireflies glowing yet.

Deep in the woods, where the tall reeds whisper, lies a quiet little lake. On this soft summer night, a big round moon floated above the water, and the whole world waited, hushed and still. The fireflies were not awake yet.

Little Sorrel the grey-brown rabbit hops eagerly down a mossy path to the moonlit lakeside, bouncing with excitement, while gentle Mama Rabbit follows close behind.

Down the mossy path hopped little Sorrel, with his mama close behind. Tonight was the night the fireflies woke — and Sorrel had been waiting all day long. I want to see them NOW! he said, bouncing on his toes.
